MoPH Warns again against the Danger of Catching and Consuming Toxic Lagocephalus spadiceus

The Information office of the Ministry of Public Health issued the following statement:

Following up its statement issued on 19/04/2018 that warns against the danger of catching and consuming toxic Lagocephalus spadiceus, the Ministry of Public Health warns again against the danger of catching or buying this kind of fish.

The Ministry also reminds that this kind of fish has invaded our sea for more than ten years. Consuming Lagocephalus spadiceus may lead to an ascending paralysis and weakening of the lower limbs muscles since its internal organs, such as ovaries, liver and skin contain deadly poison called Tetrodotoxin. The poisoning symptoms appear four to twenty hours after consuming or touching the fish, leading sometimes to death due to the failure of the respiratory and nervous systems and the danger in all this is that there is no medicine for such a poison so far.

The citizens are kindly asked to report on any sale of this kind of fish by calling the hotline of the Ministry 1214.
